The City Council of Solana Beach cannot keep ignoring the San Elijo Lagoon wildfire risk problem.
The new Cal Fire Report identifies approximately 560 housing units at risk (227 units in High Risk areas, 333 units in Very High Risk areas) in Solana Beach.
The January 2025 wildfire devastation in Pacific Palisades and Altadena is a dramatic reminder for the Solana Beach City Council that the wildfire risk needs to be addressed immediately.
The problem will not go away on its own, and procrastination just makes the problem worse as more wildfire fuel grows.
The City of Solana Beach Local Coastal Program Land Use Plan ("LUP") clearly states that a goal of the LUP is to reduce wildfire danger: "This program maximizes the protection of natural resources and minimizes the risk from wildfire in the City at the wildland-urban interface along the San Elijo Lagoon." (page 22 of 48). Unfortunately this appears to be "lip service" - the City Council of Solana Beach has done nothing to address the San Elijo Lagoon wildfire risk.
It is time for the City Council of Solana Beach to take a stance to protect Solana Beach homes. They need to work with the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation, the Solana Beach Fire Department and CAL FIRE to implement a wildfire fuel break in San Elijo Lagoon!
